Following his tenure with Spooky Tooth, Gary Wright became somewhat of a one-hit-wonder with the 1975 soft-rock chart-topper “Dream Weaver.” But most folks familiar with that tune have no idea that the man cranked out a couple of awesome rock ‘n’ roll albums prior to hitting AM gold paydirt. Although Wright played organ in Spooky Tooth, his 1971 solo debut album Extraction is an excellent recording focusing more on guitar and songcraft. “Get On The Right Road” pulls vestiges of Spooky Tooth’s rootsy rock prowess with foot-shuffling rhythms, soulful female backing vocals and electric six-string leads that sound influenced by the open chord tones of Keith Richards and Ry Cooder. “Get Hold Of Yourself” boogies on the kind of bouncy, gospel-tinged rock that Delaney & Bonnie were playing at the time. With the semi-anthemic “Sing a Song,” Wright fans are reminded of the man’s falsetto, thought it’s clear that he isn’t singing as high on Extraction as he did with the Tooth. He is, however, rocking harder as evidenced by a more muscled rendition of his old band’s “The Wrong Time.”
